The concert will feature renowned guest soloists and musicians from the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra. Composed in 1797, The Creation was inspired by the oratorios of Handel, which is evident in its energetic spirit and sense of joy in nature. The texts are derived from the book of Genesis and John Milton's Paradise Lost. It begins with a remarkable representation of chaos and proceeds to depict the six days of creation and the joyful union of Adam and Eve in a new and perfect world. Haydn brilliantly evokes biblical images with wit, humor, great elegance, and a child-like simplicity. A pivotal moment "And there was light!" is among the greatest C-major chords in Western music.
