Meris Barreto: Prom Diva and the Foot Ball Hero
Hunter Gallery, Drury and Grosvenor Center for the Arts, St. George's School
November 4, 2013 - November 19, 2013
Mon-Sat 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Combining aspects of painting and writing in concert with sculptural materials, Meris Barreto reveals an interest in dualities by pairing ceramics with paper, bronze with stone, glass with metal, visual with verbal.
Reflecting a passion for the Japanese aesthetic, Prom Diva and the Foot Ball Hero, the installation on view in Hunter Gallery, consists of rope and translucent cast glass. The artist discloses, "When traveling [to Japan] one is constantly struck with the elegant way that various objects are tied together with rope to impart a concrete message or idea: one simple stone tied and knotted blocks a garden pathway, two islands tied together marrying them, a circle of rope (Enso) at the entrance to a temple".
