Founded in 1940 as the New England Technical Institute, New England Institute of Technology (NEIT) began as a certificate-granting trade school. The Board of Regents of Rhode Island granted the institution the authority to offer Associate in Science degree programs in 1977, and NEIT changed its name officially to the New England Insititute of Technology. In 1982, NEIT was accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. In 1984, the state of Rhode Island authorizes NEIT to offer Bachelor of Science degree programs. Today, enrollment has grown from seventy students in 1971 to more than 3,100 students. The orginial educational programs have increased to more than thirty associates and bachelors degree programs. The campus now has two locations and includes twelve buildings with more than a quarter million square feet of state-of-the-art classroom, laboratory, faculty and administrative office space on sixteen acres of land located one mile south of T.F.
