Virtually unaltered since its dedication in 1763, Touro Synagogue is the oldest standing Jewish house of worship in the United States. When George Washington visited Touro Synagogue in August 1790, he reassured the Hebrew Congregation in Newport that "happily the Government of the United States…give to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance…" These words, and the architectural gem that was home to that congregation, have made Touro Synagogue an international symbol of freedom of conscience and a must-see destination of any visit to Newport.
