Newport's Great Friends Meeting House is the oldest religious structure in Rhode Island dating to 1699. the meeting house was home to the Society of Friends, or "Quakers" as they were called by their detractors. The buidling was expanded in 1729 and 1807 and has recently been restored. The New England Yearly Meeting of the Society of Friends met here until 1905. Guided tours available seasonally, departing form the Museum of Newport History.
