In Loving Memory of Jim Gillen, the Founder of Anchor Recovery Community Center.
With the coronavirus pandemic — and the confinement, depression and financial stress that it has caused — opioid use in the country has skyrocketed, studies have found. Overdose deaths have increased by a historic 16.9 percent nationally, according to a recent report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It cited more than 81,000 deaths in the 12 months ending in May 2020 — the highest number of overdose deaths in a 12-month period in U.S. history and one of the factors that led to a one-year reduction in life expectancy in the country, something that has not happened so dramatically since World War II.
Students from Providence College and The School of Continuing Education were assigned a project to raise awareness and funding for a local organization whose mission it is to support, educate, and create a path for recovery from addiction. When deciding on a fundraiser we agreed as a team that bringing people together after a year of social distancing is important and laughter is the best medicine. It is our goal to educate and raise awareness for the remarkable work being done at Anchor Recovery. It is our mission to Stop the Stigma! surrounding addiction, recovery, and substance use disorder.
Our team selected Anchor Recovery Community Center as their mission is to work with families and children throughout Rhode Island giving peer to peer support.
To attend this event of comedy, music, and more to raise awareness, we ask for a $15 donation or a donation of your choice to this organization. https://www.providencecenter.org/donate
