African American Artists of the 20th Century; Virtual Lecture Series

In celebration of Black History Month, Linden Place Mansion is hosting a series of talks, held virtually, highlighting African-American art and artists of the 20thCentury. These timely talks will highlight the lives and works of some of the most influential African-American artists. Join us as we explore a wide assortment of art media and address themes of identity, experience, culture, racism, civil rights, and more. The talks will be broken up into three weekly sessions:
Week 1, February 22, 4 PM- 5:15 PM– Jacob Lawrence and Horace Pippen; Rural and Urban Life and the Great Migration
Week 2, March 1, 4 PM- 5:15 PM– Charles White & Elizabeth Catlett; Portraits in Drawing, Printing and Sculpture
Week 3, March 8, 4 PM- 5:15 PM– Romaire Bearden & Basquiat; From Jazz to Hip Hop, Musical Influences
The talks feature artist, Suzanne Lewis. Suzanne Lewis has over 30 years experience in the field of Adult Education, having taught both classes in English as a Second Language and GED classes in Providence and Central Falls. She has a degree in Art of Teaching from Rhode Island College. She is also a practicing artist with a Certificate in Drawing and Painting Studies from RISD. For the past 10 years, she has given presentations on different artists and periods of Art History through the Lifelong Learning Collaborative and other local art associations.
