Join us for the 3rd Annual Newport Juneteenth Celebration!
When: Saturday, June 21 from 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Where: Eisenhower Park - 32 Touro Street in Newport, RI 02840
The event will feature speakers, historians, storytellers, live music and dance performances, youth activity booths, craft vendors, food trucks, colonial musicians, the Bristol Fife & Drum Corp; traditional Indigenous dance performances; a drum performance by master African artist Sidy Maiga with a hands-on Drum Circle; and storytelling by Valerie Tutson of the RI Black Storytellers, plus an encampment of regimental reenactors and more.
From 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM, Washington Square will be closed to make way for a parade to honor Algernon Ward. At the end of March 2025, RISHM shared the recent passing of Algernon Ward, founder of the First Rhode Island reenactors and model for the Don Troiani Painting, "Brave Men As Ever Fought." This painting will be exhibited at the Colony House on Juneteenth, June 21st. Ward was the recipient of many awards including the W3R-US Hall of Fame for his role in bringing the story of a little-known group of heroes to public awareness.
