“Walking Rhode Island- A Guide to Hiking in the Ocean State”
Charlestown Land Trust’s annual meeting of members will be held on Wednesday, November 15 at 5:00 PM at the Kettle Pond Visitors Center, 50 Bend Rd in Charlestown. Following the business meeting John Kostrzewa, author of “Walking Rhode Island- A Guide to Hiking in the Ocean State”, will give an illustrated presentation.
Exploring Rhode Island through easy and moderately difficult walks is a great way to exercise, get some fresh air, observe wildlife, learn some history and discover places that you may have never known about. In his talk, he’ll share how and why he started, where he has hiked and what he has learned on the trail. John will point out his observations about the history, geological features, vegetation and wildlife. He’ll also offer recommendations about where to go this fall and point out what you need to bring with you. Along the way, he’ll explain what makes Rhode Island’s trails unique and outline some of the challenges that Rhode Islanders face with regard to maintaining the state’s public places.
Following John's presentation, he will have books available to sell and sign!
John Kostrzewa writes the “Walking Rhode Island” column for The Providence Journal and has been hiking across the state for decades. Kostrzewa worked for 42 years in the newspaper industry, including the last 29 at The Providence Journal as a business reporter, columnist, business editor, and assistant managing editor. He retired from the Journal in 2017 and spent three years as an adjunct professor at Bryant University. Since launching “Walking Rhode Island” in 2021, he has written more than 100 columns. He compiled 40 of the hikes into a book, with pictures, GPS coordinates and trail maps, which was released in September 2023. A College of the Holy Cross graduate, Kostrzewa resides in Cranston with his wife Carol.
