One of the most common questions in New England gardening is “Why don’t my Hydrangeas flower well?” Hydrangeas are some of our most beautiful flowering shrubs with the size and color of their inflorescences and their length of flowering times. However, there is so much confusion in regard to water and soil requirements, sun exposure, fertilization, and pruning. Conditions in which one species thrives could very well kill a different species. We will discuss the common species in New England: Macrophylla (Big Leaf), arborescens (Smooth), paniculata (paniculate), quercifolia (Oak Leaf), while we visit specimens in the gardens.
