This artistic family grew up on the grounds of the beautiful St. George’s School in Middletown. Their father was the chair of the English department and her mother was an accomplished portrait artist graduating from Yale, you can see one of her pieces at the Newport Hospital.
Daughter Kate loves playing with light and is a powerful colorist and impressionist working in watercolor and oils. She attended the Rhode Island School of Design and the Art Center of California. She teaches painting in the Newport area. Jane is a member of the Northeast Basket Makers Guild and has taken several Master classes with Flo Hoope, Judith Olney Bonnie Gail, and Sandy Whalen. Jane has taught this craft for many years.
William came under the influence of Spring Bull Gallery’s founder Richard Grosvenor when Dick taught watercolor, oil painting, and art history with infectious enthusiasm at St. George’s. They would go out painting together and began a long artistic friendship. At Yale, he came under the influence of New York abstract expressionist Jack Tworkov and Josef Albers. Others he was influenced by were color theory by Sewall Sillman and painting by Richard Lytle and Andrew Wyeth’s dry brush techniques in watercolors
