Longhouse Celebration- Tomaquag Museum x The Steel Yard

- July 12, 2025
Join Tomaquag Museum and The Steel Yard at Farm Fresh Rhode Island (10 Sims Ave., Providence, RI) for a vibrant community celebration marking the unveiling of a remarkable collaborative art installation — a modular steel longhouse designed and built by eight Indigenous artists.
Through a joint grant and partnership between Tomaquag Museum’s Indigenous Empowerment Center and The Steel Yard, this one-of-a-kind structure was imagined and brought to life by Indigenous artists who were selected through an open application process. Under the skilled guidance of The Steel Yard’s staff, led by Tim Ferland, the artists received hands-on training in metalworking and welding to complete this ambitious and culturally significant project.
Measuring approximately 10 feet wide, 9 feet tall, and 16 feet long, the longhouse is built entirely out of steel — a tribute to traditional Indigenous architecture reimagined in a form that will endure for generations. Designed to be modular, the structure can be transported and displayed, but will ultimately reside as a permanent installation in the village at the new Tomaquag Museum location in Kingston, Rhode Island.
This event is more than just an unveiling — it is a celebration of Indigenous creativity, resilience, and collaboration.
Attendees will enjoy:
- Traditional hand drumming and storytelling
- A marketplace of Indigenous artists and makers
- Delicious food and refreshments
- Community connection and cultural sharing
“We are honored to celebrate this incredible achievement with our community and partners,” said Lorén Spears, Executive Director of Tomaquag Museum. “This longhouse represents the strength of our living culture, built by the hands of our artists, and made to inspire future generations.”
Admission is free. Donations are welcome to support the ongoing work of Tomaquag Museum and its Indigenous Empowerment Center. For more information and event updates, visit www.tomaquagmuseum.org/events.
