Join us at the Museum of Work & Culture for a special exhibit covering the astounding history of soccer in Rhode Island!
You’ll be taken back to the late 19th century when one of the earliest organized soccer clubs in America, Pawtucket Free Wanderers, was established in 1885.
You’ll learn of Oliver Watson, the first African American soccer player, who made his first start in a senior league match in 1894.
You’ll be able to see where the first U.S. Open Cup final was played in 1914 - the oldest annual team tournament in U.S. history.
This is all just the beginning of the Ocean State’s long and winding story with the beautiful game.
Come learn how industrialization was the foundation of this sport in our country. See how the modern game is growing and still showcases our tiny state on the soccer landscape in a big way.
