Did you know that long before there were paved highways, Great Road was one of the most important colonial travel routes through Rhode Island and into Massachusetts? It was called THE GREAT ROAD!
In the 1700s, this very road connected farms, mills, meetinghouses — and the everyday people who would eventually help shape a new nation. When we say “We The People,” we’re not just talking about famous presidents. We’re talking about farmers, blacksmiths, mill workers, teachers, and families who lived and worked right here along Great Road.
By the time George Washington became president in 1789, communities had already spent years debating independence, supporting the war effort, and building the foundations of a new republic.
This Presidents’ Day, we’re celebrating not just the leaders — but the PEOPLE — who made the presidency possible.
250 years later, their stories still live on right at Hearthside. WE THE PEOPLE: The Journey of Great Road's History & Legacy explores the early pioneers and the role they played in building Lincoln and the founding of America. Special exhibit opening at Hearthside April 19th through September 19th with additional programs featured throughout the duration.
