What we can(not) see: One-day Memoir Writing Workshop
- 18 Valley Street, 18 Valley Street, Jamestown, 02835
- Newport County
- May 17, 2025
Inspired by Rachel Elizabeth Seed's documentary, “A Photographic Memory,” which will be screened at the Jamestown Arts Center on May 15th, this one-day writing workshop will focus on family photographs and the narratives we create around them. Whether you are an experienced writer or just beginning to explore the written word, join us for a 3-hour workshop where you will immerse yourself in the art of memoir writing with Lambda Literary Award-winning poet and writer, Michael Klein.
We will explore how our memories of the moments captured in photographs relate to narratives, and how they can contribute to writing essays or memoirs. Participants are encouraged to bring a variety of photographs (both digital and printed) to the workshop. Michael will lead participants through writing exercises, discussing how the accuracy of the narrative compares to what photographs show us, and how these elements can enhance our writing.
While viewing the film may enrich our discussions and serve as an introductory topic to illustrate the various forms memoirs can take, attending the screening on May 15th is encouraged but is not a prerequisite for joining the workshop. Everyone is welcome!
Please bring a selection of photographs, as well as a laptop, tablet, or notebook for writing.
