MASTER & COMMANDER W/ WILL SOFRIN, AUTHOR OF ALL HANDS ON DECK : SOLD OUT

We're so excited to start off summer with this one-of-a-kind event that combines local Newport ties, top-notch storytelling, adventure on the high-seas, and one of the most underrated cinematic masterpieces: Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. Celebrated author Will Sofrin will be in-house screening a video presentation about his new book All Hands On Deck- a thrilling account of the 18th century replica ship that was sailed from Newport to serve as the floating set in Master and Commander. Presented with our friends at Charter Books, and IYRS, Will will be signing books for sale in the lobby before and after the film. After Will's presentation with original crew who sailed the vessel, there will be a break for libations (as a sailor's life demands) and then the movie will screen at 7:30!

Plot Description: In 1805, aboard the H.M.S. Surprise, the brash Captain Jack Aubrey (Russell Crowe) and his trusted friend, the ship's scholarly surgeon, Stephen Maturin (Paul Bettany), are ordered to hunt down and capture a powerful French vessel off the South American coast. Though Napoleon is winning the war and the men and their crew face an onslaught of obstacles, including their own internal battles, "Lucky Jack" is determined that nothing will stop the Surprise from completing its mission.

Book Descriotion: All Hands on Deck is a story for all. Imagine The Princess Bride but set in the year 2002. This is a story about human relationships and survival as a crew of thirty men and women are pressed to quickly learn how to sail the American tall ship Rose –a replica of an old British warship– 6,000 miles from Newport, R.I. to San Diego, CA, to make the Hollywood film Master and Commander: Far Side of the World, a film based on the writings of Patrick O'Brian.

The clock was ticking, tens of millions of dollars were on the line, they came close to sinking, and could have died, all while trying to deliver a movie prop. Just a few days in, a terrifying hurricane-strength storm nearly sank the ship, and later, a rogue wave caused a nearly fatal dismasting. And the ups and downs weren't limited to the waves –with the crew split into factions, making peace between warring camps became necessary, too, as did avoiding pirates and braving the temptations of shore leave.
