The Japan-American Society of Rhode Island hosts the Black Ships Festival, a Japanese- American festival, commemorating the historical voyage of commodore Matthew C. Perry, USN, of Newport, Rhode Island. Perry's voyage in his "Black Ships" opened trades with Japan after 200 years of isolation with the signing of the Treaty of Kanagawa in 1854.
