Golf courses in RI

It’s tee time! Rhode Island is home to an important piece of American golf history in the form of the private and historic Newport Country Club. Co-founded in 1893 by Theodore A. Havemeyer, the first president of the United States Golf Association and namesake of golf's Havemeyer Trophy, Newport Country Club was one of the five clubs that formed the USGA. It also hosted the first U.S. Open and U.S. Amateur tournaments in 1895.

As the summertime home of acclaimed golf course architect Donald Ross, Rhode Island is also home to some of the finest public golf courses in New England. Ross, and others, have designed challenging, beautiful, unique courses, many of which, such as Newport National, are nationally-known. Many of our courses feature fabulous ocean views. Here's a few to get you started on your Rhode island golf adventure.

Newport National Golf Club

Designed by legendary golf course architect Arthur Hills on land that was once a nursery farm and orchard in Middletown, Newport National is considered the "Number One Public Access Course in New England" by New England Golf Monthly. This 7,200-yard, par 72 championship golf course was voted "Rhode Island's Best Golf Course" by World Golf Awards and offers beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean and Sakonnet Passage. It's built to challenge golfers of all skill levels and is said to be reminiscent of the great courses of Ireland and Scotland. You can take a look at this gorgeous, environmentally sensitive, fescue-lined, links-style course for yourself with this virtual course flyover.

Triggs Memorial Golf Course

One of the world-class Rhode Island golf courses designed by Donald Ross, Triggs opened in 1932 in Providence built on 140 acres of the former Obadiah Brown Farm. It's a par 72, 6,522-yard course, with a rating of 72 and features relatively "small, strategically bunkered greens" on a course that follows the natural topography of the land. In 2020, Golf.com listed it among "14 of the best municipal golf courses you can play in the United States" and Links Magazine rated it an "American Dream Course of the Northeast." For more information, watch The Golf Channel's feature on Triggs and check the course out.

Meadow Brook Golf Course

Located in Richmond and considered a "hidden gem" in Southern New England, Meadow Brook originally opened in 1929. In recent years the course has been renovated by renowned golf course designers Roger Rulewich and Dave Fleury and is said to be accessible to golfers of all skill levels. The championship course is 7,400-yards, Par 72 course and has the distinction of being the longest public course in Rhode Island. This picturesque course features large greens and strategically placed water. Check out a map of the course.
