A National Historic Landmark. Newport's most palatial summer residence was built (1893-1895) for Cornelius Vanderbilt II by Richard Morris Hunt. Modeled after Italian Renaissance palaces, the 70-room mansion overlooks the Atlantic Ocean. Two audio tours are available including a Family Tour geared to children. The Breakers is open daily year-round, except Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. There is also a children's cottage on the grounds, open seasonally. Decorated for Christmas in late November and December. Museum store.
