The summer retreat of coal magnate Edward Berwind and his wife Herminie, The Elms was a thoroughly "modern" house when completed in 1901. So technologically advanced for its time it appeared to work "as if by magic," it also houses monumental art works, including wall-sized Venetian paintings, Chinese lacquer panels, and tapestries. Decorated for Christmas in late November and December. Self-guided audio tour. A separate admission guided Servant Life Tour is also available. Open daily year-round except Thanksgiving and Christmas. Museum store.
