Francis C. Carter Memorial Preserve

This South County gem is one of The Nature Conservancy's best loved preserves in Rhode Island. Visitors are invited to explore more than six miles of marked hiking trails, winding through oak and pine forest, and around one of the largest open grasslands in the state. The terrain offers something for everyone, from rocky uplands to wide, flat farm paths. The preserve is open from sunrise until sunset for hiking, bird watching and nature observation. Horseback riding is also allowed on certain trails, and bowhunting is permitted from September to January. The preserve is accessible via public trailheads on Route 112, Narragansett Trail, and King's Factory Road. The Nature Conservancy regularly leads two-hour nature walks on the preserve, showcasing key features of this classic southern New England forest. Scout and school programs are encouraged to use the property as an outdoor classroom.
