HISTORIC PROPERTIES
If you like to stay where there's a sense of history, here are a few options to consider.
The Jailhouse Inn, a former jail in Newport built in 1772 to replace an earlier jail on the same spot built in 1680 and remained the headquarters of the Newport Police until 1986. There were several notable escapes, including a mason in the 1800s who removed bricks around the window to break out.
The Chanler at Cliff Walk was built from 1870-1873 by a New York congressman and his wife, a member of the prominent Astor family. It is an example of the Newport's Gilded Age summer "cottages" (aka mansions).
The Graduate Providence (formerly The Biltmore) was built in 1922 by the same architectural firm that created Grand Central Station. At the time it hosted celebrities including Louis Armstrong, Douglas Fairbanks, and F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald and during prohibition, the basement was a speakeasy.
