A must visit is Slater Park and the oldest Looff “stander” carousel in the world. This century-plus interactive piece of art was built in 1895 by Charles I.D. Looff and later moved to Slater Memorial Park in 1910. The Slater Park Carousel is the oldest Looff “stander” carousel in the world, as well as being only one of six to reside in its original structure.
The carousel, a twelve-sided building, is in the Looff style with a cupola and original stained glass windows made of Sandwich Glass. The stationary carousel is made up of forty-four horses, three dogs, one lion, one camel, one giraffe, and two chariots and features a turntable moving at 9 miles per hour. A band organ, built in 1909 by the North Tonawanda Musical Instrument Works, was purchased in 1996 and completes the carousel.
In September 2018, the Looff Carousel was named the Historic Carousel of the Year by the National Carousel
Association and in October 2023, the Carousel received the prestigious Hey Rhody Stewardship Award by Preserve Rhode Island.
