North Burial Ground Black Heritage Tour
North Burial Ground is Providence’s oldest municipal cemetery dating back to 1700 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. With over 100,000 interments in the last 300 years, North Burial Ground is host to numerous notable interments within the fields of business, politics, architecture, public health, art, and more. This self-guided Black Heritage Tour includes the graves of artist Edward M. Bannister and his wife, the entrepreneur, hairdresser, and abolitionist Christiana Carteaux Bannister. Their headstone was designed by Mr. Bannister's friends and fellow artists at the Providence Art Club.
